In-School Field Trips

In-School Field Trips

Let us bring our lessons to you with hands-on, standards-based programming delivered by our museum educators. Only available to schools in or close to the Triangle area.

Details:

  • $225 for 1.5 hours within a 10-mile radius from our Chapel Hill location. Outside of this radius, a $0.76 per mile fee round trip will apply.
  • Maximum length of 3 hours. Extra $75 per 30 mins added.
  • Payment can be made before, during, or after visit; payment is due maximum 30 days after visit.
  • Each 1.5 hour field trip contains one lesson. No more than 30 students per lesson for grades K and above. 2 lessons require a 2 hour session minimum for grades K and above, for up to 60 students total served.
  • No more than 4 lessons total, 120 kids total (30 per lesson).
  • Includes a hands-on lesson led by two NCCM Facilitators and all materials.
  • Requests must be made at least 4 weeks before the preferred visit date to ensure adequate staffing and resources. Requests later than 4 weeks may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • The 1.5 hour field trip for a PreK class may be split into two lessons based on discretion of the field trip coordinator. If you are unsure about the appropriate field trip length relative to class size, please contact the field trip coordinator at programs@ncchildrensmuseum.org.

Lessons Offered:

Sense-ibilities: PreK

Explore the senses with a picture book, hands-on activities where students make guesses using their senses, and a craft.

Sink and Float: PreK and K

Students will explore if objects sink or float. Includes a story book reading and a take-home craft.

Bee School: PreK through 1

Students will learn all about bee life cycles, pollination, and bee jobs with a picture book, role-playing game, and hands-on craft.

Spring Animals: K and 1

Students will explore what different animals do when the weather warms up. Lesson ends with a nest-building activity and craft.

Weather Wonders: K and 2

Students will learn about different weather tools, the water cycle, and finish with a “cloud in a bottle” hands-on demonstration.

Mini Makers: 1 and 2

Students will become engineers and design, build, and test a bridge in small groups. They will also budget the materials needed to build their bridges and measure their final products.

Good Vibrations: 2

Students will explore the science of sound with hands-on activities and crafts.

Life Cycles: 2

Students will learn about the life cycle of a butterfly, frog, and pea. They will make take-home crafts to demonstrate what they have learned.

Matter: 2 and 3

Students will explore states of matter and physical and chemical changes with hands-on demonstrations.

Robotics: Grades 1 through 5

By exploring the basics of binary code and programming, students will engage with both off-line and on-line coding. This program includes the use of robots to learn basic programming.
